This position’s main focus is the health and welfare of the animals while at the shelter, ensuring the humane treatment of animals in the county’s custody, and ensuring a clean and sanitary environment.  This position is full time offering competitive pay, excellent benefits and matching retirement contributions up to 7%. Public Safety - Animal Control

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for assigning in the cleaning of the animal kennel and for the care of feeding of impounded animals.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Cleans and disinfects cat cages and changes litter boxes.
  • Provides animals with fresh food and water.
  • Washes food and water dishes and cat litter boxes.
  • Washes, dries, and folds laundry.
  • Sweeps and mops kennel floors.
  • Hoses down dog kennel.
  • Cleans the lobby.
  • Observes animal behavior to identify illness or aggression.
  • Performs related duties.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of animal care principles. 
  • Knowledge of the animal shelter cleaning and sanitation principles.
  • Skill in the provision of animal care.
  • Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Animal Control Operations/Training Coordinator assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of related animal care and shelter maintenance duties.  Potentially aggressive animals can continue to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to provide care for animals in the animal shelter and to participate in the cleaning of kennel facilities. Successful performance contributes to the effective housing and care of animals.

CONTACTS

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, other county employees, pet owners, veterinarians, representatives of animal rescue groups, volunteers, vendors, and the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while standing or walking. The employee frequently lifts light objects.
  • The work is typically performed in an animal shelter. The employee may be exposed to noise, contagious or infectious diseases, and irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain Kennel Technician certification.
